Ready for Adventure! Here’s my Travel Kit, What’s Yours?

Hey, guys! How are ya? As I make the final preparations for the youtube channel we make the preparations for our adventure to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. My camera batteries are charged and my makeup bag is curated! Most of this was stuff I was able to decide on immediately, with one item being a final addition and replacing its predecessor. Now guys, before I get into it, can I emote for a minute?

I’m literally so incredibly excited. Things are kind of looking up and if they weren’t, it’s okay for one reason: adventureWe haven’t gone on a big trip since our impromptu trip to North Carolina before I had this blog. So of course, we have to go back… for the content and in no way because I want to. I’ve never been to Tennessee and my one gripe is how far away Gatlinburg is from Nashville. I imagine we’ll head there eventually, too!

Travel Kit spread
Shamelessly using Java’s Bunny Chair for a Travel Kit holder

On to the essentials for our trip… y’know, if you can consider cosmetics as essential. I want to feel pretty, okay? My little travel kit turned out more robust than I had intended… I really didn’t know I used that many things on a near daily basis and once I figure out how to do lashes quickly, they might find their way into the kit too. Let’s get to it!

For the sheer volume of items, I’m going to tackle this as a list!

Too Faced Hangover Prime/Set/Refresh Spray

I got this so long ago, or it feels like a long time ago. When I absolutely first got started in this little cosmetic thing. I literally haven’t used it since I got it, because I also got the other primer from Too Faced at the same time and quickly decided I preferred the cream. Now I much prefer my Tatcha Silk Canvas, but I don’t want to take the chance of losing their weird little disk. I suppose the cream primer from Too Faced irritates my skin, because of the itching, but I haven’t noticed the same with this spray primer.
This one actually makes me curious about the Mac Fix Plus I’ve heard so much about! This one made it into my kit because the size is perfect! So far over the course of my test runs with my kit, I’m not disappointed!

Anastasia Foundation Stick (banana)

This is a very new find. In fact, I’ve seen it at TJ Maxx for months and passed over it for so long. The thought of a stick foundation didn’t appeal to me, and surely they never had my shade. Right? They only had this weird shade called “banana” and eventually, I got curious. I swatched it on my jawline and… I was shook. Legitimately shocked that it was a nice match for my skin. It makes me look nicely awake and conceals the redness in my cheeks. Best of all for my travel kit, it’s very compact. It blends out well with my paddle brush up there, and fairly effortlessly too. I regret not picking this up before because I can’t find them anywhere now.

Tarte Shapetape

You guys have probably heard how loved this particular concealer is. You can’t browse youtube Gurus without hearing about this one at least 10 times. I caved and had to try it. The shade I have is a little light for my skin (surprisingly), so I transitioned to using this under my eyes to just priming with it. Something about that ecstatic look of super bright under-eyes doesn’t appeal to me. This works as a great lid primer and gives (most) of my palettes great lasting power. I also like to highlight my forehead and nose with this a little to add a touch of dimension.

I want to offer a quick word of warning; don’t bake this with Bare Minerals Loose Powder. I’m totally open to the fact that this a huge learning experience for me, and this has been one of my most noticeable mishaps. The bare minerals powder severely oxidized and darkened the heck out of my undereye. It was not flattering. I tried to bake it, because it creases fairly badly on my skin. And, not only did it darken the area… it still creased!

Natasha  Denona Sunset Mini Palette

I think I do my makeup in a strange order right now, since I’m listing this out in the order I use it you can probably guess that I interrupt my face routine to do my eyes. This one is my late addition, I had been playing with the Kathleen Lights x Colorpop Collab, but despite how much I love that palette, I found the lasting power severely lacking. Something had to be done- how I can go on vacation and look drab? This little palette makes some gorgeous looks with some amazing lasting power. I found the application so mind-blowing in comparison to some of my other palettes. I will say that you need to be gentle with this one. It deposits a lot of pigment really quickly.

This was my first experience with Natasha Denona, and my curiosity with their other palettes is only getting worse. For now, I’m okay with my little workhorse here!

Urban Decay Naked Skin

This one actually replaced my Shapetape as my general use concealer. I like how close it is to my skin tone and makes me look alive without making me look insane. It’s a super down-played concealer look and looks nice and natural. I generally do my concealer after my shadow. I really don’t know why I do it in this order, but hey, it works for me. This one also creases, sadly, but I still prefer the tone under my eyes, so I make do. I’m super open to any tips on making concealer or not crease!

MUA Brow Gel/Makeup Revolution Brow Pencil

I’m going to be honest- like with most things makeup related, I have no idea what I’m doing with my brows. I’m absolutely confused. Do I fill in the natural shape? Do I make a new one? I’ve been filling in the front of my brows with the gel and using the pencil on the tail. It looks decent, or I think it does. Definitely passable, at least until I start getting hate on Youtube for my admittedly abysmal brow-game.

Kat Von D Dagger Liner

I know there’s a lot animosity for KVD lately, and I definitely don’t want to insert myself into anything as far as that’s concerned. I purchased this before I was aware and, guys, I’m going to get my money’s worth. Also, this is the liner I learned I can use my non-dominant hand to apply liner. It has nothing to do with the liner, I’m just proud. I find that this liner has nice lasting power and doesn’t smudge. Being supr black, it adds a great emphasis to my lash line and looks great with mascara filling in the rest. I literally couldn’t not include it since it’s my favorite for the moment- I do intend to get the Benefit Roller Liner as soon as I’m able to, because from the sounds of it that one might replace this KVD liner!

Tarte Lights Camera Lashes

This is literally my favorite mascara right now. I found it and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Better than sex, who now? Prior to LCL I was using Lash Paradise, and this one blew it away. There’s no way this one wouldn’t be in my travel kit. I find this one holds the curl beautifully and lasts all day, assuming I have the wherewithal to apply this after my setting spray, it doesn’t transfer. If I neglect that and put it on whenever, like I usually do, it leaves an obvious shadow under my eyes. I’m not too mad, because, as strange as it may sound it never mattered to me before.

Though I will admit to a bit of agitation when I see the transferrence whenever I pass a mirror. Talk about going to a 10 to a 0 in no time flat.

Too Faced Chocolate Bronzer

I don’t always do this, but when I do my incentive is the scent. Too faced is so irresistible to me with their candy scented products. You guys might have picked up that I have quite the sweet tooth on me. I love sweet scents, sugar… anything sweet. I… also don’t know how to bronze. I’m trying to figure out what I like with it. I like to keep my face looking really youthful, so I don’t carve out my cheeks or anything. I just use a light dusting around the borders and under my chin. It’s subtle but looks really good to me sometimes.

Lancome x Sonya Rykiel blush

I found this blush at TJ Maxx and was kind of obsessed the moment I saw it. Admittedly, it was the design got me. I really like a hand-drawn aesthetic, and this is right up my alley. The blush color is gorgeous and much, much lighter than it looks in the compact. I will say that it’s really, really easy to go too strongly with this due to the formula. I, for some reason, like a little blush across my nose, so I won’t use this for that purpose. I think I like to apply this with my fingers and then blend it out with my paddle brush, because I generally don’t like the applicators that come with things like this.

Laura Gellar Highlighter

My recent favorite step to my routine is highlight, and guys, I’ve amassed a fair collection of highlighting palettes with little standalone ones sprinkled in. This particular one, is a gorgeous champagne color that’s nice and subtle but can be built up. I didn’t include it in the picture just above since it’s visible in the first picture and has a transparent top. I remember being so pumped to get this, and then I stopped using it. Since I’m getting ready for youtube, I’m planning to try to make use of a lot more of my collection.

I think this little highlight is one of their travel sized one? It’s definitely pretty tiny, especially in comparison to the Anastasia Amrezy highlight. I wouldn’t call it a slouch!

All-Nighter Setting Spray

This one was suggested by one of my best friends during Ulta’s 21 days of Beauty. I snagged it the moment it went on sale for 15 dollars, and I haven’t looked back since. I love this. I was lucky enough to get a sample size to throw into my travel kit, since the larger bottle won’t fit in my bag. I have no idea what I’m going to do when my sample bottle is empty… unless I pour some of the other bottle into it, but who wants to take the chance of spilling this holy grail?

Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lips

I have 2 colors of this right now, big bang, which is a gorgeous glittery pink, and backtalk, which is a perfect light pink. Backtalk is almost kind of a nude for my lips. The color on backtalk lasts an insanely lont time. I will never regret buying either of these because they’re stunning. I included both for our adventure for a day and night thing. I might add a more red-toned one before out trip for our inevitable date nights. I just have literally no idea which red to pick. Why do I have so many red lipsticks???

Estee Lauder Translucent Powder

This is literally something I don’t use on the daily. I got it on a whim because in my head, I associate Estee Lauder with basically something akin to the lap of luxury. Who doesn’t like luxury? I feel like I’ve used it once or twice to control the oil that pops up in my T zone through out the day. If I recall correctly, that’s how it earned a place in my travel kit! It doesn’t oxidize or darken, it just controls the shine.

I did include a Neutrogena Lip Gloss there too, but not for any special reason. Just for the times when I want to just wear a gloss. I can’t wait to share our trip with you guys, so be sure to follow on Instagram @Java_and_Jeans so you don’t miss any of the fun! I have no idea what’s in store for us in Tennesee, but I’m so incredibly ready! If you guys have a dedicated travel kit for your beauty routine, share that in the comments below!

Let’s kick off the twelve days of Christmas with a Wishlist!

Hey guys! It’s starting to look and feel a lot like Christmas with enough sales to make your head spin! It’s that time of when we make lists full of hope for things we’ve wanted all year (afterall, we’ve been good right?). We also make lists of promises to ourselves, but this post isn’t about what we hope to change and maybe stick to, this is about what things have come out that I’m on the hunt for!

I have a few things I’m after from makeup to outfits, and video games! Let me know what things you’re hoping for in the comments below!

Cosmetics

  1. Tatcha Silk Canvas Protective Primer

I can think of no other item to start off this segment of my Wishlist. I’ve been hearing so much about it from various youtubers and I’ve seen what it can do in comparisons against some wannabe dupes. I’m enamored. The amount of product you get in this one package makes the hefty price tag worth it. I mean aside from the advantages it appears to have over other balm primers, such as NYXs. I’m so curious that I can hardly stand it ad I can firmly say that Tatcha has earned a place on my wishlist!

        2. Too Faced Pretty Rich anything

It’s no secret that I really like Too Faced, and this new collection they’ve put out tickles my fancy. I love all that glitters, and this collection definitely has it. The glosses are gorgeous, the shadows are stunning and I love the highlighters. I’m feeling the adorable packaging, of course. There’s something so fun and edgy about this collection, that I really want to add to my stash!

   3. Dose of Colors Mickey Lip Gloss in Rockin It

I’ve heard nothing  but good about Dose of Colors liquid lips, and I’m curious to try it. Why not start with an iconic collab with Disney? This color looks like such a cute nude, that can go with just about anything and I love the versatility of it. I’ve heard that their formula is pretty great, so this year I aim to give to give them a shot!

  4. Clairsonic Mia Smart Beauty Device

This one is more of a tool than a cosmetic item, and I’ve been curious about this for a while. I’ve seen a few youtubers use it and it’s been on my wishlist for a while now. I think the idea is great for people like me who are a little lazier with their blending. I try, but I have a little difficulty getting the finish I want. Chances are this would save me money on beauty blenders! Thanks to Tati for making me realize that I want this!

Apparel

  1. Cuddle With Me Sweater Dress from Posh Peach

I’ve recently gotten really into sweater dresses! They’re so cute, stylish and versatile that I feel the need to begin a collection. The Posh Peach always has the cutest things and I’m magnetically pulled in when I get within a mile of their adorably welcoming shop! This particular dress just looks so cozy that it’s begging for a Starbucks cup of something warm!

    2. Lily Tulle Skirt from Francesca’s

I haven’t had the ocassion to break out the tulle recently, but I want it to be known that I LOVE tulle. It has such a girly, princessy feel that I absolutely adore! There’s something so youthful about it. This particular one is a little toned down in comparison to my current tulle skirt but that just makes it perfect to wear to work! I’m dying for some work appropriate tulle.

    3. Calvin Klein Faux Wool Trench Coat in Bellini (Belk)

I’ve always loved the look of trench coats and have admittedly impulse bought a few traditional looking ones. But what I’m really after is a trench coat that is toasty, soft and flares out… and is preferably not black like everything else in my closet. I think the perfect one would be a new color for me as far as outerwear goes: pink. This one is way too cute and I can totally see sporting it to work when I need a little pick me up!

    4. Plaid Circle Skirt (HM)

I love plaid, and especially on my skirts. This one has the feel of a school marm and I’m kind of living for it. The length is great for a modest work outfit, but you could also make it a little edgier too with some accessories. I really wasn’t planning on putting two skirts on here, but I fell in love the moment I saw this one!

 Miscellaneous

  1. Animal Crossing  on the Nintendo Switch

You guys may not know that aside from blogging about whatever it is I blog about, I also really enjoy playing video games! Animal Crossing on Nintendo’s newest system has been at the tip top of my list since the system was announced. The game was finally announced at a Nintendo Direct in in October, I believe and I’m so excited. It’s up for preorder on Gamestop’s website though no date for release has actually been determined as of yet. I highly recommend checking out this title! Especially if you’re into cheerful town simulations with charming anthromorphic characters stress-free gaming experience

2. RODE Compact On-Camera Mic

I’m trying to get myself ready to start producing youtube content periodically, and on the test runs I found my audio to be lacking. It’s not clear with just my camera, so I’m on the hunt for a microphone to start off with. I know that with me it’s not good to drop loads of money on a thing without knowing if I’m going to get a footing, so 60 bucks is a decent compromise. This is more of a practical thing right now rather than a plain ol’ want.

3. Starbucks Reusable Tumbler

When I saw this particular update in my Google Feed I was super interested- of course the big question is whether or not they’ll be available when I’m able to get one. The tumble would save me money in the end and get me and instagrammable tumbler to take to work with me! While $40 is a little high for what I want to pay for a cup, the end result would be so worth it!

4. TYSSEDAL Dressing Table Vanity from Ikea

The other thing I’m kind of hoping to have when I started producing videos, is a decent vanity. Right now it’s clear to me that I’m going to have to utilize other methods of storage for my veritable collection, so I’m not too concerned with storing all of my makeup in a single table. This one would go great in the space I have planned and coordinate well with the other thing I have picked out to accent my station.

That’s my wishlist for this wonderfully materialistic holiday! I’m not sure what (if any) of these items I’ll be able to attain, but I did keep my price points somewhat in the realm of reality. I have some big plans for the coming year where this blog is concerned and I hope you guys are there to see us into the new year! What sort of things are on your list of must haves this holiday season?

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post in this Christmas Countdown!

Sticker!

I’m  trying to design a sticker for each day of this (event?)! Today’s is this, which I had designed ahead of time!

That little sticker is available on Redbubble, click the image to check it out!

Beauty Debut! Makeup Sale Loot! (Haul!)

Beauty Debut! Makeup Sale Loot! (Haul!)

Hey guys! Welcome back to Java and Jeans, as you may have seen, I have plans to include Beauty here. Since I mentioned it, I’ve been wildly trying to figure out exactly how to go about that. I was told by a co-worker that there was a huge makeup wholesale sale coming to Columbus, hosted by this group!

The moment I got wind of it, I knew it was going to be my first adventure into adding beauty to the blog. I reached out to everyone I knew and dragged a good friend of mine out to enjoy it with me!

When we walked in, I knew the loot potential was through the roof. Guys. I have a little bit of an issue with self-control when in the face of cosmetics, which you can see by that preview image over there.

I absolutely had to know how this wholesale makeup stacks up against my recently acquired brand names. We meandered around the giant conference room, taking in the huge selection of colors, palettes, kits and everything else you can imagine. Some of which, I had no idea how to use. One thing I ended up getting, I had no idea how to use at all., and it now lives in my bathroom taunting me for my ignorance.

Tease Me

This first Palette had some fairly risque names, which makes sense based off the name of the palette. The Tease Me palette from Beauty Creations has some wonderful pigmentations and the shimmer shades are gorgeous and reflective. I can definitely see this as something that you would have to smoke out and mix with a matte to make it more relaxed. This slideshow has the palette in all its glory, along with the swatches I did. As you can see, they have lovely pigment. As for longevity, I can’t speak for that. Though I will definitely be testing these colors in more situations!

Rating; 4/5

I really liked the pink packaging and I loved the aesthetic. While swatching, I did try to blend it on my arm and it blended nicely, so I’m excited to try this with a look. I don’t think I can give it a solid 5/5 due to my inexperience, in the future when I’m more knowledgeable I will amend it some way. But, for the current moment, I like this palette and would recommend it. The color selection is versatile for night or day!

Sugar Sweets

This second Palette is the Sugar Sweets palette from Beauty Creations, also. All of my palettes are from this brand, because none of the other ones really spoke to me. I loved the name, and look at this container. It is the absolute cutest thing I’ve seen (makeup-wise) and I had to have it. I’m really feeling like this may be a knockoff of  Too Faced, though I’m not sure which palette. I don’t know enough to say for certain though.

I am pleased to announce that this palette performed very well! First, I threw on my primer, that small pot seen in that preview, and the subtle smokey eye I threw together lasted the entire day. This was also after spritzing it with my new setting spray. All in all, I’m pleased with the pigmentation of these colors.

Rating 4/5

I don’t know if I can justify giving this product a 5/5 rating so 4/5 is about the best I can do. I think it could improve in the blending department and maybe pigmentation could be a little better. In the end, I don’t know too much about makeup at this juncture, maybe I’ll re-rate it in the future and amend it one way or another.

BarelyNude2

This last palette appears to be trying to knockoff Urban Decay’s Naked line of palettes. I hate to say that it does not perform as admirably as the Sweets or Tease Me, as far as pigmentation. Even the paler colors from earlier showed up against my skin, and as you can see from the swatches in the slideshow below, these did not.

The darker shades do show up, which makes sense, but I’m super disappointed with those light nudes which are my go-to colors most of the time. To its credit, the palette does seem to be made of sturdy material and the brush looks to be useful. So it’s not a complete wash.

2.5/5

Most of these points come from the construction of the palette itself. This thing feels nice and has a lovely weight to it. The mirror on the inside seems to be fair quality and the brush that’s included is very similar to the one included in the Naked palettes. The color being weak really docks the points a fair bit.

My Lucky Day

The other items I grabbed on impulse from the wholesale makeup blowout, were

  1. a Twist-up Concealer- Strange barrel, but nothing too weird. I don’t think it works too well for an under-eye concealer, based off of my experience today. But it was decent for the whole whopping 4 dollars it cost. Also pictured, is a concealer tube with a built in brush (untested) and the primer I mentioned earlier. Honestly, the primer smells like the lip gloss that is included with children’s makeup kits, but seems to deliver well.
  2. The white bottle up above is the setting spray, I’ve never used it before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I gave it a chance after my friend tested it and gave it her seal of approval. I tested it today and my makeup didn’t move all day. This was 8 dollars well spent, as far as I’m concerned!
  3. These last couple items are that blending sponge and 5 lip treatments. I purchased the lip treatments to cross into 60 dollars so that I could spin their prize wheel.

Now that we’re onto the prize wheel- after I was told that my purchase was 5 dollars short from spinning the wheel, I hurriedly searched for something to total that extra 5. It took me only a second of internal debate on whether or not it was necessary to spend 60 dollars. In the end, I decided why would I come here if I’m not going to experience it?

I threw those 5 lip treatment tubes on the counter and handed over the payment, with that I made my way to the wheel and uncertainly flicked it. I didn’t do well, it moved three spaces and came to a stop on Eye Shadow. Not the best, I thought, but I’ll take it. It’s a win, so it works. The cashier called out to me to go ahead and spin it- this bolstered my confidence so I gave it a decent spin. This time….

It stopped on Jack-Pot. But only just. If I’d have spun it just a little harder, it would have rocketed past the Jack-Pot and most likely right back to the eye shadow.

What happened next was surreal- the gentleman at the table behind me shouted Jackpot, the woman behind by the register doubled down on his cry. A voice floated over the crowd in an echo of the people behind me. I was confused, and startled. Are they giving me my money back? After what felt like a few minutes, but was actually probably less than a minute, a man approached with this expensive looking gold box.

I did find the product on their manufacturers web page just now, and I just had a heart attack. Click here to see the store page of Jewels Cosmetics, this item specifically. That cost- are you telling me that I spent 60 bucks to win a $600 dollar item? I guess it really was my lucky day.

After that reveal, I’m honestly not sure what to say. I’m surprised! Why is that so expensive? What does it do? As Grav3yardgirl asks, does this thing really work? My big question is, what situation is important enough to use this? At what point can I justify slathering a product that is half a grand on my face? Is there even a time where that’s appropriate? Literally, the only thing I can think of that would do the price point justice is the night before my wedding.

Consensus!

I had a blast at this Sale. And really, where there’s great prices and lots of makeup, how could I possibly be sad? In the end, it was a surprising and worthwhile experience. The event was a little more cramped than I expected, with the tables set up in a maze-like formation that funneled us to the checkout line, before we were ready. The workers there were lovely and  I would definitely recommend checking them out if they’re in your area. Follow their facebook page linked in the first paragraph to keep on top of their stops!
