Hometown Cravings; Forray into the Secret Menu with an Affogato

Hey there, guys! For today’s post I tried something new and a little more expensive than I was planning! My fiance has been trying to get me to try Affogato, but being so hopelessly hooked on a macchiato, I have yet to do it. What better place to ease myself in and dip my toes into that area than America’s sweetheart, Starbucks. I’m using this drink from the secret menu, if anyone wants to have their own experience with this drink!

I suddenly remembered that I’ve been advised to try Affogato style coffee, while I was sitting and leisurely sipping my Macchiato, and watching guilty pleasure videos. I figured, “why not” and got up to order it. “Why not” is because it’s a whopping 7 dollars for a grande, but me loving you guys just so much, I decided again, “Why not?” and swiped my card.

I’m going to give you a play by play. First sip, I hated it. When I say I hated it, it made me gag. What happens if I stir it? Which I’ve gathered isn’t what real coffee drinkers do, but I’m me and not them, so I’m going to stir it. I stirred it and moved the straw about midway up to get it away from the pure, unadulterated death at the bottom of the cup, which by this time has had time to settle while writing this. Why do people do this to themselves?

I’m hunting for the vanilla flavor that should be there and just getting sip, after cautious sip of pure espresso, which as it turns out, I don’t care for in it’s pure form. After stirring, it became a bit more pallatable. I wonder how this would be with legit ice cream, rather than whip?

Day five, I’m finally adjusting to the flavor and I feel like I’m moving fast… I’m sitting still. Maybe it’s because I’ve downed 2 shots of almost pure espresso and I’m finally left with mostly vanilla frappe and java chips. I really can’t say in good conscience that I will try this near-death experience again, just because it’s not really up my alley. I may try an authentic one, if I get a chance, but this has not been a pleasant experience for yours truly.

Honestly, once the espresso died down a little, I found myself enjoying it. It’s probably because I had gotten rid of the parts I didn’t like and was left with what I do. I don’t  know if that’s the drink’s credit, or mine.

If you’re brave, and relatively uninitiated, like me, give it a go and let me know what you think down below!

Hometown cravings: The Three Big Yums

Hey guys! I know I missed a couple posts- honestly, I’m not in a good headspace. I’m hoping things get better soon, but no improvement yet. I don’t want to bore you guys with my mental health woes, partially because I don’t want to wallow in my self-pity here, but also because I want to show you the three Frappes that are now at Starbucks. One of which, is returning, the other two are new if I’m not mistaken.

The first one they have is the Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino, it is delectable. Starbucks, please keep this! The first thing to hit is the scent of caramel and toffee on top of the marshmallow whipped cream. I did notice that first sip is almost aggressively sweet and rich, which is fine. It’s very caramel, so not for those of you who are more casual partakers of caramel.

This was the first one I tried, and I was hooked. I’m not going to let it replace my Macchiato due to caloric content, but it’s definitely up there with my favorite frappes. Some sips have. It does little bit of a bitter tinge, maybe it’s more nutty? It adds a great contrast to the sweetness.

I wasn’t sure which one to do next, but I ended up going with the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino. The first sip was following the caramel one with aggression. It’s a more rich, almost dark chocolate flavor. Like a frozen hot chocolate. I’d recommend this one if you’re a fan of really chocolatey flavors. How many ways can I find to say that I really enjoyed this one too? How many things can you say about a drink that amounts to a mocha with cookies in it? Guys, if you want chocolate, drink this. It will obliterate your craving.

The last one is the one that is making a temporary return. The Starbucks S’mores Frappuccino. This came to me topped sky-high with marshmallow whipped cream covered in graham crackers. This is the first time I’m able to taste the whipped cream unfettered by other flavors, and oh my god. It tastes so nostalgic to me for some reason. It reminds me of Halloween.Or, is it the little Santas you get that are marshmallows covered in chocolate? Maybe it tastes like Easter? My point is, it’s really, really good.

When I finally got around to sipping the actual drink I found it to be likewise pretty good. By this time the sugar high is starting to hit me, because I have all three of these sitting in front of me, so I’ll try to focus. It tastes primarily like the Marshmallow whipped cream, but also vaguely like honey. It’s exceptionally rich, and I think I prefer it to the chocolate one.

New at Starbucks; Ari’s Cloud Macchiato

New at Starbucks; Ari’s Cloud Macchiato

Good Morning, guys! If you’re living under a rock, or just don’t particularly follow Starbucks new releases, you may not have heard about the Cloud Macchiato. Otherwise, you may be fully aware of the controversy surrounding this new drink. This little cup of coffee has caused its share of strife in the vegan community due to being a collaboration between Starbucks and the musical Ariana Grande, also known as Chanel Number 2 .

The cause for the outrage surrounding this Macchiato topped with fluffy, lightly sweetened foam, is that it’s not vegan. I wasn’t aware that Ari was vegan, but her fans are. And, they are livid. To top it off, there’s not vegan option, due to the foam that crowns it having a main ingredient of egg whites.

Drama aside, the Cloud Macchiato comes in two flavors, cinnamon and caramel. If you’ve been following for a while, you know I prefer the super sweet flavor of caramel in my drinks. This is no different. This post is going to be a little bit of a roller coaster, because at first, I didn’t like it. But after about 15 sips, and sloshing it in the cup, I eventually decided I kind of dig it.

I was so excited to try it, not because of the origin, but because I’ve always loved macchiatos. I firmly expected to love this right off the bat. At first sip, which I took without stirring or sloshing, was a bitter affront to my taste-buds. I mean, maybe I do like my drinks overly-sweetened, but this was on a different level. I did notice a richness hiding under the sharp bite that greeted me. And, once I got the courage to drink a little more, I notice the foam had sunken into the drink and toned down the flavor to a mild nuttiness with some kick.

At that point, I stirred it, because I wasn’t picking too much of the caramel. Once I did that, the foam was almost completely mixed in and the caramel had come to the surface to make a difference. I think this was the point where I decided that I do sort of like this one. It’s not for those who don’t like bitterness, that’s to say it was very nearly not for me. My final impression was that it was pleasantly sweet, the foam and caramel worked together to tone down my initial impression. Even with the sweetness I was loving at this point, I had a slight reminder of the bitterness lying wait under the surface.

Taste; /5

I award this one a 4/5, I don’t feel like I can give it a five just because it was a little of a hit and  miss for me. In the end I did enjoy it, but it wasn’t the best macchiato. While not being the worst, either. I do think that a 4 is a fair rating for the Cloud Macchiato.

Starbucks Does Valentines Day With The Cherry Mocha

Hey Guys! Today’s post is brought to you by Starbucks- because my roots are showing. And my roots are super crazy about the sweet, dessert-like beverages that Starbucks comes out with. Even though Japan usually gets better drinks than we do over here in the states. Like the Princess frappe that I feel really hurt about still. I may have heard about the Cherry Mocha a little late, which isn’t new. I generally am a little behind the curve. But I’m still hype that I at least heard about it!

Even though I bet Japan has more options, we did get a Cherry Mocha for the big day, and the one thing I’ll say negative about it is that I think it would have been more geared toward the holiday if they had capitalized on the whole pink thing that monopolizes everything about romance. Like, I kind of feel like they missed with that decision. But, that aside, the flavor really raises to the aesthetic. This Cherry Mocha tastes like the Cherry Cordial candy that I always think I like more than I do. And I mean that- it tastes exactly like a Cherry Cordial.

Cherry Mocha Taste Graphic
Visual representation of the taste of the Cherry Mocha

This is really more like dessert, but honestly, what else is new. It’s a great example of Starbucks doing what Starbucks does best- sweet coffee that may as well be a milkshake. That’s literally not even a diss, though it sounds like one. It has the richness of dark chocolate, with a little sharpness, which makes me think of the Ghirardelli 70% cacao chocolates. I love dark chocolate, so I’m kind of all about it. The cherry adds a little bit of tartness to the flavor, which is delicious. I don’t even really like cherry flavors, generally, I’m a raspberry girl.

Honestly, I can see myself begging to stop by Starbucks on Valentine’s day just for this. I’ve been hooked on it for the past week since I caught wind of it. There’s just something about drinking a chocolate covered cherry topped with whipped cream and granulated sugar that speaks to me on so many levels. It’s sweet, it’s rich, it’s something that I’ve been trying to like for years in a package that works for me. For some reason, I don’t like cherry cordials, but I thoroughly enjoy the Cherry Mocha.

Valentines Day is in 3 days, guys! I hope you guys are ready and that those of who don’t have anything planned for the occasion at least take time to pamper yourself!

Update;

I know I kind of died with Youtube, I was sick for so long and literally had no voice, I do have a load of products that recently got here that I’m testing for future videos as well as I’m working on the tarteist pro remix video. I’ll be cross posting it here. Please be gentle with me guys, we can learn all of this crazy stuff together! đŸ™‚

Chain; Starbuck’s Cascara Coldbrew… ew?

Chain; Starbuck’s Cascara Coldbrew… ew?

Hey there guys! Thank you for joining me for this late post! I know I usually post around noon, but I’ve honestly been swamped. And that’s on top of trying to recover from whatever has me under the weather. I’m bringing us back home with a (somewhat) new-ish drink from everyone’s favorite chain coffee shop; the Cascara Coldbrew!

I’ll keep this one fairly short, but I want to preface this with a thanks to the gentleman who allowed me to try a sample of this one! Based off the title, I didn’t care for it, but I really liked the opportunity to give it a go!

The first thing I did was sniff it- because, this is what I do, especially when faced with an unfamiliar “Cascara”. Right off the bat, I was stricken with how sharp it smelled. I caught the scent of bitter nuttiness that was offensive to my sugar-cravings. If you remember my attempts to like coffee soda, this gave me war flashbacks. Not a fan of remembering a drink I’ve worked so hard to repress.

The Drinkening

Onto the actual drink itself; I procrastinated on taking the first sip. Despite the super nice barista assuring me that it was citrusy, and creamy, I found that I did not agree. Once I was able to psych myself up, I closed my eyes and took a sip. Right off the bat, I noticed the froth was mildly earthy, almost nutty with those citrus undertones.

The coffee portion of this drink, which I was excited for before having one handed to me, was surprisingly smooth. Not sweet in the least, which I should have figured. It honestly could just be my propensity for sweets, that made me take this as bitter. I did note the citrus flavor kind of peaking through the nuttiness. My general feeling is that it’s like coffee soda, without the carbonation. I think my least favorite thing about this one, is that it’s rich. It’s got a heavy thickness that lingers at the back of your throat and leaves you tasting it for minutes afterward.

Honestly, I did look into sweetening it. But I was unsure on how I wanted to go about that. I kind of feel like sweetening it would make it into a different drink, and I may try that next time… If there is one. I think what I’m trying to get at with this post, is that super nice baristas aside, I don’t like the Cascara. And I guess I certainly don’t like cold brew.

Taste; /5

Really, I don’t think this one needs any explanation. I think this is first time since the Cinnamon and Almondmilk Macchiato that I’ve been this displeased with Starbucks. That Juniper latte was rough, but I don’t know… I think this one might give it a run for its money.

It’s okay Starbucks, you can’t please everyone!

Hometown Cravings; Starbucks New Cinnamon Shortbread Frappe!

Hey, guys! I’m actually kind of on time for this particular post, because this drink just launched yesterday! I’ve been frequenting Starbucks pretty heavily for the past month or so, since I work 5 minutes from both Starbucks, and two thrift shops. It really gives me things to do when I get off, especially since just ten minutes in the opposite direction would take me to an outdoor shopping mall. So, maybe not a great thing for my flagging self-discipline.

Anyway, let’s get to the drink!

Cinnamon Shortbread Frappe- topped with nutmeg and whipped topping

First off, just take a moment and look at that. Doesn’t it look delicious? It is. It absolutely, 100% is. Though I do have to add a disclaimer, I’m really not sure if this qualifies as coffee per se, but it’s good for what it is. Starbucks topped the drink with their signature vanilla whipped topping, and I love their whipped topping. I don’t much care for nutmeg, most times, but this wasn’t a bad combination.

The pairing of the whipped cream and the nutmeg, made for a taste that was vaguely reminiscent of pumpkin pie. I think because I’m comparing the topping to vanilla ice cream like you’d put with your pie. Literally, if I liked nutmeg more, I’d say just give me this in lieu of pumpkin pie. The one con I have to address, is I did find that it made me extremely thirsty.

Being slightly dehydrated from the nutmeg is as good a reason as any to dig in! The first thing I noticed was that it was certainly as rich as you’d expect it to be, especially being a frappe. The second thing that really hit me was how well the scent of nutmeg complemented the flavor of the drink. I enjoyed this one with my lid off so that I could smell it. It literally added a whole new dimension to the drink, I highly suggest going this route if you’re a user of the flat-top reusable cups, like myself.

The flavors for this new signature drink are buttery vanilla and cinnamon, with a touch of nutmeg. Somehow this combination translates to almost caramel to me. The buttery flavor really adds an extremely rich and satisfying texture to the overall tone of the drink that I really enjoyed. The vanilla was amazing and paired wonderfully with the other warm flavors that are mixed up in there. One more disclaimer, this one is another Starbucks treat that comes across as more dessert, because, guys, I have to reiterate: It’s so rich.

All in all, my basic impression of the Cinnamon Shortbread Frappe is that I love it. I don’t think it will replace my tried-and-true vanilla caramel or my white chocolate peppermint mocha, but it’s something I’d love to try again! If you’ve tried this one, let me know what you think in the comments below!

Taste;

Honestly, I know I’ve slipped from my old style of taste rating! I’d like to bring it back! Is it any wonder that with the level I raved on this one, that it deserves a 5/5?

On the 4th day of Christmas Starbucks gave to me (roundup!)

Who doesn’t love seasonal treats that only come out once a year? Everyone has their favorite Christmas Guilty (or, not so guilty) pleasures. Mine, as well as a host of others, love Starbuck’s seasonal offering. As displayed by my Halloween Coffee post, I love Holiday drinks! So of course, I took myself to Starbucks to try each of their seasonal brews!

Caramel Brulee

This is my number one pick from the current line up over at Starbucks. I love sweet things, and by that logic, I love caramel. Which definitely accurate. This drink is a great substitute if you’re tired of the same old peppermint. I never thought I’d be tired of the peppermint mochas, despite loving them so so so much.

This drink has a nice smooth finish, the majority of the flavor is caramel but that tapers off into a mellow espresso flavor. It’s a delicious winter drink that I can’t recommend enough if you fit these two requirements:

  1. You love any and all things Starbucks
  2. You’re like me, and you love sweets

This would be a great drink to sip as you hang out with the girls, or a relaxing night in by the fire with your partner!

Toasted White Chocolate Mocha

This one, I didn’t manage to grab a picture of. But as you’d imagine, that’s far from a travesty being that so many of the drinks look the same and taste so different. This one, to me, was not really -good- different. I generally don’t enjoy fruity flavors in my coffee, I’m cream all the way. This latte has a dusting of cranberry sugar on top, and the mingling flavors of caramel and mocha. Strangely, this one is actually too sweet for me and the surplus of sugar comes across bitter somehow.

If you’re really, and I do mean really into sweet coffees and enjoy a touch of fruitiness in your coffees for the holidays, this might be for you. And I think I’m going to let you guys have this one.

Gingerbread Latte

One of the ones I was excited to try this year was the Gingerbread latte, despite not being too huge on gingerbread. I did try this as a frappe a while back, which you can see below. I made the mistake of thinking that I liked Gingerbread a lot. Oh boy was I was wrong. It was too much. During a raining evening after work, I decided to give with the hot variant a try for this post!

While this isn’t my usual thing, it’s not bad at all. Each sip has a nice spice to it that is brought down by the somewhat harsh espresso. I’m not sure that I’ll be getting this one again, because I really don’t care for ginger. It’s pretty true to what it’s based off it. I think it’s a loving homage to a traditional Christmas treat. It’s not my favorite thing on this list, but it’s also not my least favorite. It’s squarely in the middle. If you guys want to enjoy a Gingerbread cookie without the hassel of… y’know, eating it, this is for you! I will add really quick, that I did really like the frappe. I would not recommend pairing it like I did, unless you love ginger.

Juniper Latte

It’s beginning to taste a lot like Christmas! I was finally able to drag myself over to @Starbucks to try the #juniperlatte that I’ve been so curious about! Look for it in one of the upcoming posts for the #12daysofchristmas . . #coffeelover #coffeelife #coffeeholic #caffeine #coffeebreak #instacoffee #coffeelovers #coffeeaddict #coffeelove #coffeeoftheday #coffeetime #coffeecup #coffee #morning #yummy #drink #holidaycoffee

I know this post is a little late to the party with the Juniper Latte, but guys, life. That’s all I have to say. Times is hard, in the immortal words of Ms. Lovett.

via GIPHY

Anyway, I did make it in to taste this unique brainchild. Of course, I sniffed it first to see what the smell was like. It smelled almost savory, which is not a thing I associate with my coffee. The overall flavor is woodsy. It’s sprinkled with sage, so it has a bit of an herbal taste as well. I made the mistake of taking a large swallow, thinking it was coke, and holy. crap. Immediate regret. It has a sharp, earthy aftertaste and not even the good bite of espresso. My question to Starbucks is this: why. Why would you market this? Come on. I guess I understand, it’s a unique idea. “Hey, let’s make a coffee that tastes like a tree,” because of course, we have to try it.

I’m a little rusty on my coffee reviewing skills, and guys, I took a sip and that aftertaste hits hard. I don’t think I’ll be getting this again. Literally, all I can say now that I couldn’t say before is “I drank tree flavored coffee”. And is that a bragging right I really want to have?

I was really hoping to wrap this post up on a positive note. I was hoping it was going to have more a piney, vaguely evergreen vibe. How wrong I was. If you guys took one for the team, what were your thoughts? Will you be buying it again?

With that trainwreck, we wrap up another day of our countdown! We still have more on the schedule, so be sure to check back tomorrow! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find some coffee to hold me over til tomorrow!

Let’s kick off the twelve days of Christmas with a Wishlist!

Hey guys! It’s starting to look and feel a lot like Christmas with enough sales to make your head spin! It’s that time of when we make lists full of hope for things we’ve wanted all year (afterall, we’ve been good right?). We also make lists of promises to ourselves, but this post isn’t about what we hope to change and maybe stick to, this is about what things have come out that I’m on the hunt for!

I have a few things I’m after from makeup to outfits, and video games! Let me know what things you’re hoping for in the comments below!

Cosmetics

  1. Tatcha Silk Canvas Protective Primer

I can think of no other item to start off this segment of my Wishlist. I’ve been hearing so much about it from various youtubers and I’ve seen what it can do in comparisons against some wannabe dupes. I’m enamored. The amount of product you get in this one package makes the hefty price tag worth it. I mean aside from the advantages it appears to have over other balm primers, such as NYXs. I’m so curious that I can hardly stand it ad I can firmly say that Tatcha has earned a place on my wishlist!

        2. Too Faced Pretty Rich anything

It’s no secret that I really like Too Faced, and this new collection they’ve put out tickles my fancy. I love all that glitters, and this collection definitely has it. The glosses are gorgeous, the shadows are stunning and I love the highlighters. I’m feeling the adorable packaging, of course. There’s something so fun and edgy about this collection, that I really want to add to my stash!

   3. Dose of Colors Mickey Lip Gloss in Rockin It

I’ve heard nothing  but good about Dose of Colors liquid lips, and I’m curious to try it. Why not start with an iconic collab with Disney? This color looks like such a cute nude, that can go with just about anything and I love the versatility of it. I’ve heard that their formula is pretty great, so this year I aim to give to give them a shot!

  4. Clairsonic Mia Smart Beauty Device

This one is more of a tool than a cosmetic item, and I’ve been curious about this for a while. I’ve seen a few youtubers use it and it’s been on my wishlist for a while now. I think the idea is great for people like me who are a little lazier with their blending. I try, but I have a little difficulty getting the finish I want. Chances are this would save me money on beauty blenders! Thanks to Tati for making me realize that I want this!

Apparel

  1. Cuddle With Me Sweater Dress from Posh Peach

I’ve recently gotten really into sweater dresses! They’re so cute, stylish and versatile that I feel the need to begin a collection. The Posh Peach always has the cutest things and I’m magnetically pulled in when I get within a mile of their adorably welcoming shop! This particular dress just looks so cozy that it’s begging for a Starbucks cup of something warm!

    2. Lily Tulle Skirt from Francesca’s

I haven’t had the ocassion to break out the tulle recently, but I want it to be known that I LOVE tulle. It has such a girly, princessy feel that I absolutely adore! There’s something so youthful about it. This particular one is a little toned down in comparison to my current tulle skirt but that just makes it perfect to wear to work! I’m dying for some work appropriate tulle.

    3. Calvin Klein Faux Wool Trench Coat in Bellini (Belk)

I’ve always loved the look of trench coats and have admittedly impulse bought a few traditional looking ones. But what I’m really after is a trench coat that is toasty, soft and flares out… and is preferably not black like everything else in my closet. I think the perfect one would be a new color for me as far as outerwear goes: pink. This one is way too cute and I can totally see sporting it to work when I need a little pick me up!

    4. Plaid Circle Skirt (HM)

I love plaid, and especially on my skirts. This one has the feel of a school marm and I’m kind of living for it. The length is great for a modest work outfit, but you could also make it a little edgier too with some accessories. I really wasn’t planning on putting two skirts on here, but I fell in love the moment I saw this one!

 Miscellaneous

  1. Animal Crossing  on the Nintendo Switch

You guys may not know that aside from blogging about whatever it is I blog about, I also really enjoy playing video games! Animal Crossing on Nintendo’s newest system has been at the tip top of my list since the system was announced. The game was finally announced at a Nintendo Direct in in October, I believe and I’m so excited. It’s up for preorder on Gamestop’s website though no date for release has actually been determined as of yet. I highly recommend checking out this title! Especially if you’re into cheerful town simulations with charming anthromorphic characters stress-free gaming experience

2. RODE Compact On-Camera Mic

I’m trying to get myself ready to start producing youtube content periodically, and on the test runs I found my audio to be lacking. It’s not clear with just my camera, so I’m on the hunt for a microphone to start off with. I know that with me it’s not good to drop loads of money on a thing without knowing if I’m going to get a footing, so 60 bucks is a decent compromise. This is more of a practical thing right now rather than a plain ol’ want.

3. Starbucks Reusable Tumbler

When I saw this particular update in my Google Feed I was super interested- of course the big question is whether or not they’ll be available when I’m able to get one. The tumble would save me money in the end and get me and instagrammable tumbler to take to work with me! While $40 is a little high for what I want to pay for a cup, the end result would be so worth it!

4. TYSSEDAL Dressing Table Vanity from Ikea

The other thing I’m kind of hoping to have when I started producing videos, is a decent vanity. Right now it’s clear to me that I’m going to have to utilize other methods of storage for my veritable collection, so I’m not too concerned with storing all of my makeup in a single table. This one would go great in the space I have planned and coordinate well with the other thing I have picked out to accent my station.

That’s my wishlist for this wonderfully materialistic holiday! I’m not sure what (if any) of these items I’ll be able to attain, but I did keep my price points somewhat in the realm of reality. I have some big plans for the coming year where this blog is concerned and I hope you guys are there to see us into the new year! What sort of things are on your list of must haves this holiday season?

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post in this Christmas Countdown!

Sticker!

I’m  trying to design a sticker for each day of this (event?)! Today’s is this, which I had designed ahead of time!

Quickie: Starbucks Did Something Right

Hey everyone! I’ve been trying to find something rave on from Starbucks (Aside from my old usual mocha frappe), and I found it, in an unlikely place on their menu. I’ve previously, only had the Black and White Mocha, White Chocolate Mocha with caramel and that… cinnamon thing, I had before.

Seriously, the Coconut Milk Vanilla (iced) Latte was fantastic. I’ve never cared too much for coconut milk, and I’ve surely never had it in my coffee. Thi drink was a surprise and a half, after the first taste, I was hooked. It had a very harmonious flavor with the coconut and vanilla mixing, and left me feeling very zen.

Without a doubt, this is a great vacation drink. If you enjoy coffee that tastes a little stronger, with a very down-to-earth sweetness, this is the drink for you!

I see you Starbucks, good job!
