Trying my Luck with Origin Coffee for St Paddy’s Day!

   Happy St Paddys day, everyone! Or…. post-St Paddys day, since this is going up on Monday, the day after St. Patrick’s day. This weekend I hunted around town, since I feel kind of jipped by the lack of Seasonal drinks from my guilty pleasure, Starbucks. I did find a tiny Starbucks in the hospital, that had two seasonal drinks. One a Paddy Mint, which I assume would have been mint chocolate. And the other, was a Fruity Pot of Gold, or raspberry, blackberry and vanilla. The Fruity Pot of Gold was fantasic.

     Anyway, this post isn’t about Starbucks. It’s about my favorite little local coffee shop; Origin Coffee House. I walked up to their door and saw that they had not one, but three options for my festivities. I took my chance with the top option on their board; the stout. You guys may know my abivalence on whether or not I like hazelnut, counting on the chocolate and caramel toning it down.

    I took a hunch and used heavy cream, in lieu of my whole milk for the added sweetness and richness it affords. On first sight, I noticed a conspicuous lack of green. Which is more an aesthetic grievance than anything else. The drink itself is very, very rich. Almost reminescent of a syrup? It lingers sweetly on the tongue, with the strong flavor of mocha. Caramel offered a pleasant sweetness just underneah the mocha, with the nuttiness from the hazelnut being so subtle as to be nearly not there. 

     The main reason I went with heavy cream was to drown out the nutty undertones, and I’m thinking that should not have been done. I may go back and try another thing off the list tomorrow, if time allows. I’m really curious to find out whether or not I enjoy Irish Cream. So far I’m starting my St Paddy’s Day weekend on a slightly highnote, because I’m never upset when I have coffee. I feel like my choice of heavy cream may have dampened this particular drink. I’d probably love this with the whole milk- which is going to be my second taste!
