Welcome to JnJ’s 13 Days of Halloween!

Hey, guys! I have some cool posts planned for the next week and 6 days leading up to Halloween. We may be looking at another potential movie watching party if I’m lucky enough to have people stop by, last year was a little bit of a bust to be honest. We have a few days to get in the mood, and because I’m a creature of habit beyond all else… I’ll probably feature the same movies, or maybe I won’t. We do have a movie post planned for this series after all. Some of it very well may be considered creepy!

I thought I would feature my favorite Creepy Pasta in lieu of writing my own, as I’m trying to get back to writing and I’m not quite there yet. What better way to ring in the Spooky vibes than to share my absolute favorite Creepy Pasta with my lovely readers? And also, the idea that by indulging myself in creepy pasta and the written word I may be able to grab that spark again.

This one is fairly long, so I’m just posting the first portion of it here for you, and if you want to you’re welcome to follow the proceeding ‘read more’ link to check out the full story. This story is by u/bloodworth on Reddit and I absolutely adore their writing. This one has a  special place in my heart because it’s got a foot in the real world with the corresponding phone number that titles it.

Ladies and gentleman, I present to you, 630-296-7536 ( Call at your own risk, I’ve called and I still live… but who’s to say you’ll be as lucky?). I hope you love it as much as I do!

I’m sure that all of you on r/nosleep are used to the cry for help type stories by now. Help me, help me, blah-blah-blah. I won’t bore you with another. Even if I wanted your help, you couldn’t give it to me, because your help is useless.

Why?

Because you’re not a member.

I just wish that I wasn’t either.

It all started innocently enough. With a phone call.

I’d been up for a few hours, unpacking and cleaning, waiting for the plumber to call. I just moved into a cabin and the contractors fucked everything up. Because of that, I now have the wonderful task of making calls to competent people that can fix what the original contractors did wrong.

The phone rang at 12:06.

Not bad, I thought. Usually plumbers don’t bother to call or show up until 5.

When I picked up the phone I didn’t even get a chance to say hello before a woman on the line told me to “Please hold for the next available operator.”

I hopped up and sat on the cabinet in the kitchen. It was one of the few places in the cabin not occupied with boxes. Elevator music leaked into my ear. I’d started to drowse off when the music stopped and a piano chord that sounded like it was three notes that didn’t quite go together played through the receiver twice.

A voice came on the line.

“Welcome to Boothworld Industries. My name is Samantha and I will be your operator today. Name?”

I didn’t know what to say so I told the operator my name.

“Sir, we know who you are. I’m your operator. Please give me a name to access.”

“I don’t understand,” I said.

“It can be anyone, sir. We just need a name.”

“Uh, okay,” I said. I made up a name. “Harold Withers.”

“Sir, as your operator, I must point out that fictitious names, or the names of people that you don’t know, cannot be used.”

“Used for what?” I asked. How had she known that I’d made up that name? The whole thing felt like it was some sort of prank, but hardly anyone knew my new phone number.

“Remodeling.”

“Remodeling? Is this the plumber?” I asked.

“Welcome to Boothworld Industries. My name is Samantha and I will be your operator today. Name?”

If you’re still here, I’m glad to have you! You’re probably over there finishing that story. I don’t blame you! That phone number that titles the story is so cool to me. I don’t know who owns the number or who voiced the recording, but it’s perfect. I love stories that tie in to our world a bit, phone numbers, nursery rhymes… something I can interact with, y’know?

I know it’s not particularly creepy in the sense of BOO! but I feel like it fits the season, nonetheless. Happy 13 days of Halloween! I’ll see you guys tomorrow!

Let’s deviate With Movies 2-Night

Tonight, guys, I wanted us to have a night of relaxation and really get into that spooky spirit. I have a couple of movies that I really, really enjoy this time of year. I guess you could say I have annual traditions for myself. Funny thing is, it’s pretty much just Halloween that I ritualize.

These two movies that I watch each year are so vastly different from one another, so now that I think about it, I’m not sure what order to put them in. I’ll leave that up to you. No one says we have to watch these together. But, if you want to, feel free to join my Rabb.it tonight!

     2. Thir13en Ghosts

For some reason, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Growing up, I always loved the idea of the Zodiac signs having meanings and stories behind them. When I was about 16, I found this movie hiding in my family’s movie collection and gave it a watch. Imagine my immense joy when I found that it had a dark zodiac.

I love everything about this movie, from the stories that the ghosts have to the glass house and the Occularis Infernum. The only thing I don’t like is that they kill my favorite character and that I always know it’s coming now. I remember finding this movie among my mom’s huge collection of movies and popping it in. It was probably one of the first really dark movies I watched, and I love the idea of a Black Zodiac.

Also, I was absolutely in love with the detail in this movie. They gave the ghosts their own backstories which were better than the movie as a whole. In fact… I think each ghost actually would benefit from their own movie, or maybe an anthology?

Click here to join us in watching Thir13en Ghosts at 7:00 PM EST. Grab your popcorn and keep your drinks handy!

     1. Hocus Pocus

Not the remake. Oh goodness no. I don’t think I ever intend to watch them shred my #1 Halloween movie to bits. Bette Midler is a gem, and Sarah Jessica Parker is actually rather adorable herself. I love this movie and always dreamed about having a little black cat named Thackeray Binx after Binx from this movie.

I think this is the perfect Halloween movie. It’s a little gimmicky, and all in good fun. It has a festive and light feeling, despite the Sanderson’s literally wanting to eat children. If you ignore that tidbit, it’s light-hearted, I swear!

Click here to ring in Halloween with us at 9:30 PM EST, after a brief intermission between movies. Refresh your drink and grab some more popcorn!

Last Minute Makeup? I’m Here for 4 You!

Hey there, guys! Welcome to day four of our first Seven days of Halloween! I was a little at a loss for what to do for Today’s post, until I spoke to one of my Barista friends over at Origin, she suggested that I do a side by side with a few tutorials! So like some of the amazing BeauTubers that I follow, I’m going to try to follow along with some Halloween Tutorials.

Now, keep in mind that are simple, by my figuring. I tried to pick things within my skill level and one of these I’ve been watching for years. So, let’s look over a Four selected Halloween makeup looks for those of us who waited until the last minute to figure out just what we are going to do with our face!

A little Catty

This one is the one that I mentioned watching for a while. It’s cute to me. I love cats, and really any animal, so this is right up my alley. If I didn’t have my costume and stuff picked out, I probably would have done something with this.

I found a tutorial on Pinterest, because that’s where I default to when my search is mainly for images. I found this gorgeous picture of a girl rocking this look, and decided it was my turn. It looks to me like it’s not too demanding, which makes it a great candidate to start with.

To mimic this look I used a black Kohl liner from [NYX], a liquid liner for the whiskers, Black Heart black Matte Liquid Lip, and the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette.

I feel like you could pretty much get away with wearing anything with this and call it a costume, from a full-body leopard suit to a little black dress.

My Worst Nightmare

When I was a little girl, I always had a fear of dolls and ventriloquist dummies. Something about them was always so unsettling and unnatural. Flat out Uncanny Valley and nightmare inducing little monsters. What better way to face my fears than by turning myself into one of these terrible things?

This is another one that I found on Pinterest, something about the way she deadpans into the camera just spooks me a bit, but it’s not too bad.

To get this look, I used that same Kohl liner, some red eye shadow from my Morphe x Jaclyn Hill palette, White liquid liner from NYX, a White Kohl liner, Falsies from Ardell, and Maybelline Fit Me concealer in Porcelain, I finished it off with pink lips from TreStique!

With this one, to make it costume-y, I’d go with a suit looking ensemble. A white buttonup collared shirt and some black slacks should do fine!

Gonna Scare Some Crows Tonight

If you’ve ever been into plaid flannel shirts, you should have a few lying around. Which would make this totally unthreatening scarecrow an easy costume for you to throw together! I thought it was actually pretty cute. More like something you’d get from the Halloween Aisle to throw in a Kiddie maze than anything spooky. But, it’s still cool, regardless.

To pull off this look, I grabbed an orange face crayon from Walmart, that same black Kohl Liner, a black face crayon for the bigger areas, my Kiss Firery Faeries lashes and orange shadow from my Morphe x Jaclyn Hill palette.

I did have to head to the store to grab a straw hat, for this, all in all I think it’s pretty cute. You can pretty much do any color flannel for this and make it look decent. Of course, I didn’t have the colored contacts, which I don’t feel like that hurts the look too much.

You Catch More Flies…

This last one is less costume and more for parties, if you feel like you’re too “grown up” to do anything colorful for Halloween. I really, really dig this look. It looks simple but requires a tiny bit of artsiness. I did make one change just for personal preference.

To recreate this look, I used my usual Kohl liner, MUA brow gel, Snow White Lip from Colourpop and my MAC cosmetics foundation in NC10 (if there was any doubt of how pale I am). I wanted to go with red to allude to a blood sucking spider, and I felt like most of these didn’t have enough color for me.

Since this one isn’t too much of a costume, I’m going to default on a black dress for this. Not a little black dress, mind you, but a slinky, long number like this. Really lean into that dark look, y’know.  And since this one is monochromatic, I did edited mine to be b/w. I actually really like my deviation on the shadow!

I hope you guys enjoyed our Fourth day of consecutive posts for our personal favorite holiday. If you guys have any suggestions for future posts or even want to submit your own, reach out to us at submissions@javaandjeans.com. Just a reminder that we’re open to guest posts in all of our categories, and I did just add beauty to the category list that you can view on the Submission Guidelines page!

I will admit I had a lot of fun trying to do these looks, at my current skill level I think I did decent. I need better white liners, for sure but my palettes appear to be up to snuff (with what I’ve spent on them, they’d better be!). I hope to up the ante next year and do some more complex things, I hope you’ll forgive for going kind of easy on myself this year! Also, this whole post was practice on putting on falsies, at this rate I’ll be a pro in no time!

We’ll see you tomorrow for our 5th post in the countdown!

5 Creepy Coffees Perfect for the Night!

1. The Basic Witch

This first drink is called the basic witch, and it hails from the iron bank coffee company. In Columbus, Iron Bank is kind of a fixture everybody knows them, everyone loves them, I love them. They really come up with some good drinks, my favorite being to be mine which I go into pretty good detail on in a previous post.

But this entry is for the basic which, which is a beautiful mix of pumpkin spice, white chocolate, and Brown sugar. I am usually not a fan of pumpkin spice, as you can see, but I was shown the error of my ways. I’ve always thought that pumpkin spice was supposed to be overpowering, something to drown out all the other flavors. But, I guess I was wrong, or at least, in this case.

This drink has some very subtle vibes, coming from the pumpkin spice. It’s subtle vaguely, autumnal. Since, I really generally prefer cold drinks, I did get this iced which might be a little bit counterculture in pumpkin spice communities, but I really enjoy  this iced coffee. It’s quite good and it leaves me feeling a vague sweetness on the back of my tongue coming from the white chocolate which just lends a great counterbalance to the spice coming from the pumpkin. Really, It’s a very relaxed medley of flavors that is altogether charming combination. It’s making me really  feel the holiday spirit which I haven’t really felt in years. So hats off to you iron bank!

The basic witch is a drink I would definitely recommend somebody who, like me,  is not big on pumpkin spice. Honestly,  I am really a pleasantly surprised and I cannot wait to see what we come across a little later on in this list. The overall flavor of the basic which, is very mild. I detect almost no bitterness, it has a little bit of acidity that lingers but there’s almost no extreme, earthy presence from the espresso. It’s just a sweet relaxed kind of drink that is good to enjoy all year around. And guys, If they keep the spice on the shelves I may be coming back for this one!

There really is no better way to kick off a holiday coffee list, than with our very own Iron Bank Coffee Company here in Columbus Georgia. It’s a fixture very well known with his architecture and its flavors, as well as its proximity to the downtown area. It is right in the bustling heart of Columbus and is the perfect place to stop by if you would like a softer a drink or something sweet!

   2.   Great White Pumpkin

Our second coffee is also from Columbus Georgia, my hometown. This is from Midtown coffee house, which you may recall from a previous post. In true Midtown coffee house custom this coffee does have a very pleasant bite. It does a slight acidity that lingers, I just can’t say I’m a huge fan of the flavor. Might be the way their mocha is interacting with the with the pumpkin spice but it really is almost distinctly floral.

I’m picked up a nice flavor, the drink is very subtly spiced it seems very very mild in comparison to what I think about when I think about pumpkin spice. This flavor has always been one of those that really gets going in the fall and is unapologetic. But, thankfully, this one is just very relaxed with the pumpkin spice more or less, stepping aside for the mocha to shine.

My basic feeling about this drink, is that it’s, somehow, too floral for my taste. I’m not sure where it gets an almost Lavender aftertaste from. But, if that’s your cup of tea… err, coffee, then this might be for you!

3. Black Forest

The black forest latte is a unique (to me) combination of flavors that I was a touch nervous about. It’s Cherry, Vanilla, Chocolate and Bourbon, half of those flavors I don’t frequent. I’ve never been too big on cherries and bourbon is a new one for me. Guys, I was surprised with how much I liked this latte. It’s not quite cold enough here for hot drinks… But it’s okay because this one is so amazing as an iced coffee.

With each sip, I’m met with a flavor similar to a chocolate covered cherry. It’s sweet, subtle and another great contender for coffee people who don’t particularly like coffee. It’s got a very smooth texture and the bitterness is just a faint ghost that mingles well with the chocolate flavor. This really strikes me as a rich drink. Truth be told,  it is a little heavy on the tongue due to the competing flavors.

You guys know how I’m literally all about the Be Mine latte because it’s like chocolate milk? This one has just gone up there with my chocolate milk substitutes. It’s perfectly sweet, pleasantly rich and the flavors all play exceptionally well together. All around a balanced selection!

This one comes highly recommended and gets the JnJ Seal of Approval!

4. Witch’s Brew Frappuccino

I know you’re probably thinking “Starbucks? Really?” Since I stopped really posting about them. But, let’s be honest, with all of the festive things they do around the holidays it would be a travesty if I didn’t grab this contradiction. First off, it’s a rather alarming color choice. I don’t usually look at purple and green and thing “I’m going to put that in my face”. This is one time though, that I did just that.

It’s a strange choice to make the drink orange flavored, in my opinion. On top of the cream base and with vanilla whipped cream it was more like drinking a dreamsicle. Being 50 degrees outside, this wasn’t the best choice. The combination of iced beverage and chilly weather only exaggerated the bite in the air.

Those green seeds that you see swirled through the drink are Chia seeds- they added a strange texture to this concoction that threw me off. They were a bit slimy? Which isn’t an adjective I throw in with my drinks often. That aside, even though this drink completely lacks coffee and isn’t quite what Japan has for Halloween, I’d definitely say this is a fun choice for a fall drink.

5. Spooky Spice

This last drink hails from Origin coffee, which as you know, I’m completely obsessed with. We put a drink for the ocassion, with chocolate, maple spice and dark chocolate drizzle. It almost looks foreboding. Aside from The Basic Witch and The Great white pumpkin, I tried to stay away from pumpkin spice. There are more iconic flavors for the fall, like maple! I had no idea until a few months ago that I love maple.

This one has nice harmony, with the bitterness from the espresso, the rich chocolates and a hint of maple spice. It feels like a drink that I need to sip on while walking across a park blanketed by fallen leaves. Somehow, I’m getting dramatic vibes from it? I will say that this one is super rich in consistency with the gratuitous amounts of chocolate. If it’s not too hot outside, and you won’t be doing too many rigorous activities, this is one I recommend.

Of course, this is Origin we’re talking about, so if you don’t like the bite of espresso, let them know. Their beans are freshly ground and roasted. You can definitely tell. I’ve gotten a few different fall coffees from them this season and all of them are phenomenal. This one is for those of you who want rich chocolate but with Halloween spirit.

I hope you guys enjoyed this list of fall favorites to try this season! If you’re local, stop in to one of these hometon favorites or if you’re not, I’m sure you can customize your drinks to get a similar experience. Thank you for joining us for on day three of our 7 Days of Halloween countdown! Tomorrow, we’re going to be looking at a few last minute makeup looks!

6 Ghoulish Treats from PSNT

Hey guys! Happy Second Day of Halloween! Who would love to get cupcakes in your treat bag for Halloween? I’d like to point out how messy and impractical that would be before announcing that I kind of did just that! Sans the bag of course.  Petite Sweets n Treats came through!

I talked to the lovely Francine over at Petite Sweets N Treats to make us some JNJ approved Halloween treats! I didn’t give her any specifications, other than “We need Halloween cupcakes- have fun!”. This post really is a surprise for me too, I had no idea what I was getting into by asking a baker to whip us up this batch of cakes!

I’m not sure how much commentary these need, since they’re delicious and just the right amount of creepy. If you want to use these amazing cakes as a springboard for your own creepy cakes, be sure to share it with us and tag @java_and_jeans on instagram so we can drool too!

I threw these into a gallery to inspire you, and maybe tempt you to try your hand at cake decorating. Just looking at these when I picked these up made me want to see what I could do if I make my own treats.

Guys, in true Petite Sweets n Treats Fashion, these are delicious! Pardon the lack of cutting pictures of Pennywise. That’s a surprise for someone at work and I wanted to wait to dig in. I hope these are able to inspire you this Halloween to try something new and adventurous with your desserts.

Who knows, maybe you can make them for the movie night coming up! Just a quick reminder, I’ll be hosting two movies on October 30th at 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM EST. Showtime will end at about 11:00 PM EST. The link is here!
